Instructors - First Aid Qualifications

Every organisation in the UK has responsibilities for first aid according to the Health and Safety (first aid) Regulations 1981.

Appointed Person (half day)

Pre - requisites:
Valid First Aid Certificate.

Duration: 4 hours.

Who is it for?
Assessing the situation in an emergency The Unconscious Casualty Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Blood Loss & Shock HSE Accident reporting First Aid Kits and avoid cross infection.

Qualification
Skills session voucher.
Note: this course does not renew the first aid at work certificate. This course is also designed to give updates on procedures.

Basic First Aid for Appointed Person

Pre-requisites:
None, but must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the Course Contents.

Duration: 1 day.

Who is it for?

    • Those wishing to learn basic first aid.
    • Those acting as the appointed person in the workplace.
    • Those supporting a qualified first aider.
    • Those employed in a low risk working environment with fewer than 50 people.

Course content includes:

    • Personal safety, assessing the incident.
    • Priorities: DRAB check and sending for help.
    • Unconscious casualty.
    • Resuscitation: adults.
    • Choking.
    • Dealing with blood loss and shock.
    • Burns and scalds.
    • Fractures.
    • Heart attack.
    • Diabetes.
    • Strokes.
    • Seizures.
    • Reporting and recording of incidents as required by HSE(Health & Safety Executive).
    • Contents of HSE approved first aid kit.

Qualification
Appointed person certificate valid for three years. Note – this course does not qualify the employee to be an HSE approved first aider.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Pre-requisites:
Candidates must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the course contents. Candidates must be aware that they must attend the complete course to be eligible for assessment.

This is the new Emergency First Aider at Work course that will be effective from October 2009. This course is not suitable for compamies in Northern Ireland or the Isle of Mann, who should complete the 1 day Basic First Aid for Appointed Persons or 4 day First Aid at Work course.

Course contents includes:

    • The principles of first aid.
    • The role of the first aider.
    • Communicating with a casualty.
    • Minor conditions including minor cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters.
    • Contents of a first aid kit.
    • Reporting and aftercare.
    • The unconscious casualty.
    • Cardio-pulmanory Resuscitation.
    • Choking.
    • Blood loss and shock.

First Aid At Work - 3 Day

Pre-requisites:
Candidates must be able to carry out the procedures detailed in the course contents. Candidates must be aware that they must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment.

This is the new First Aid at Work qualification that will come into effect from October 2009.
The course is suitable for all companies, particularly those with a large staff or working in a high risk environment.
This course is not suitable for companies in Northern Ireland or the Isle of Mann who should complete the 4 day First Aid at Work course.

Course contents includes:

    • Principles of first aid.
    • The role of the first aider.
    • Minor conditions including small cuts and grazes, bruises, small splinters.
    • Contents of a first aid kit.
    • Reporting & aftercare.
    • Blood loss and shock.
    • Burns & scalds.
    • Eye injuries.
    • Fractures & dislocations, including spinal injuries.
    • Sprains & strains.
    • Causes of unconsciousnes.
    • The recovery position.

In addition the course will cover a practical guide to major conditions, including

    • Diabetes.
    • Seizures.
    • Asthma.
    • Heart attack.
    • Cardio-pulmanory Resuscitation.
    • Choking.
    • Stroke.
    • Sudden poisoning.
    • Anaphylactic shock.

First Aid At Work - 4 Day

Pre-requisites:
Candidates must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the Course Contents. Candidates must be aware that they must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment.

Duration: 4 day – HSE (Health & Safety Executive) approved.

Updates to this course will be introduced in October 2009.

Who is it for?
Employees who require a first aid at work certificate to comply with HSE requirements.

Course content includes:

    • Priorities of first aid.
    • Managing an incident.
    • Roles/ responsibilities of employers & employees for first aid at work.
    • Care of the unconscious casualty.
    • Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
    • Disorders of the airway.
    • Dealing with bleeding and shock.
    • Causes of unconsciousness.
    • Burns and scalds.
    • Injuries to bones, muscles & joints.
    • Poisoning.
    • Recognition and management of major illnesses.
    • Recognition of minor illnesses and appropriate action.
    • Eye injuries.
    • Miscellaneous injuries.
    • Record keeping and accident reporting.
    • Infection control.
    • Communication and delegation in an emergency.
    • Manage the transportation of a casualty.

Qualification
Recognised first aider in the workplace.
First aid at work certificate valid for three years.

First Aid At Work - Requalification

Pre-requisites:
Candidates must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the ocurse contents. Candidates must be aware that they must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment. Candidates must hold and must produce to the customer service centre a First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work Refresher certificate, which is valid for the duration of the training, prior to the course booking being confirmed. This can be renewed up to 3 months early with the unexpired portion being added to the new certificate.

This is the new Requalification course that will come into effect in October 2009.

Course contents includes:

    • The role of the first aider.
    • Assessing the situation in an emergency.
    • Minor conditions including minor cuts, grazes and bruises, small splinters.
    • Contents of first aid kits.
    • Reporting and aftercare.
    • Blood loss & shock.

First Aid At Work Refresher

Pre-requisites:
Candidates must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the Course Contents. Candidates must hold and produce to the Customer Service Centre a First Aid at Work Certificate or First Aid at Work Refresher Certificate, which is valid for the duration of the training, prior to the course booking being confirmed. This can be renewed up to 3 months early with the unexpired portion being added to the new certificate. Candidates must be aware that they must attend all sessions for the full duration.

Duration: 2 day – HSE approved.

Who is it for?
Employees who need to renew a valid first aid at work certificate.

Course content includes:

    • Priorities of first aid.
    • Managing an incident.
    • Roles/responsibilities of employers and employees for first aid at work.
    • Care of the unconscious casualty.
    • Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
    • Disorders of the airway.
    • Dealing with bleeding and shock.

    • Poisoning.

Qualification
Recognised first aider in the workplace. First aid certificate that is valid for three years. Please note that in order to attend this course you must hold a valid first aid at work certificate.

Pre-requisites:
None, but must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the Course Contents.

Duration: 1 day.

Who is it for?
Those who are involved in sporting activities and may need to administer basic first aid.

Course content includes:

    • Personal safety, action at an incident.
    • Priorities: DRAB check and sending for help.
    • Unconscious casualty: adults & children.
    • Resuscitation: adults & children.
    • Choking: adults & children.
    • Dealing with blood loss and shock.
    • Burns and scalds.
    • Fractures.
    • Minor bleeding.
    • Bleeding from special areas: face, mouth, tongue, loss of teeth, ripped nails.
    • Spinal injuries.
    • Asthma.
    • Winding.
    • Drowning.
    • Chest injuries.
    • Management of sprains, strains and dislocations.
    • Management of damage to achilles tendon.
    • Cramp.
    • Friction burns and sunburn.
    • Angina and heart attack.
    • Diabetes.
    • Head injuries.
    • Contents of first aid kit.
    • Reporting and recording of incidents.

Qualification
Emergency aid for sports certificate valid for three years.
