Modern Karate - introduction

Some Karate schools or clubs take aspects of traditional Karate, combine them, and create syllabus' that are know as 'modern Karate'.

It is a natural process to take the best elements of different styles and create a new approach that is focused on specific objectives. Self-defence and military hand-to-hand combat techniques have often 'borrowed' from different martial arts to create optimised training for specific situations. It has been the path of Karate for centuries. When we describe a style as 'modern' we suggest it has been developed quickly and relatively recently.

The results can be highly useful and are tailored for short and intense training programs where techniques need to be learned quickly.

Some styles have developed their Modern Karate further to form a more cohesive syllabus. Ultimately your choice of style may be determined by your entry point in Karate - that is what your local club was teaching.

There is no absolute right or wrong way to go. It is a matter of your choice and what works for you. You'll encounter some fiercely divided opinion on 'modern' versus ' traditional' - here we hope to avoid that and simply outline information about the styles.
