John Gilliland 7th Dan
Chief Instructor of Gakushuin Karate

John is an appointed delegate on the interim Board of the English Karate Federation (National Governing Body of Karate)

Began training in Judo and Ju Jitsu in Scotland in 1966, following into Karate as my Judo instructor (John Kerr) had karate lessons at Clurankwai Judo club on Saturday afternoons once Judo was finished, initially I was not allowed to join karate since classes were open to adults only.

I was allowed eventually to train in Karate as my dedication to training seemed to impress Kerr Sensei and therefore he relented and allowed me to train. At this time gradings were few and far between, with higher grades being awarded by Kimura sensei either during his occasional journeys to Scotland, or by travelling to Birmingham.

Joining the Army, I have been fortunate to both travel and train with a wide variety of instructors throughout the world, however arriving in Germany where I stayed for over 13 years, I trained largely under DKV initially with Ochi Sensei, but also with several of the DKV seniors including Karamitsos, and Mohr. Whilst Shotokan suited by body style and approach, I have been fortunate to keep an open mind and have also trained with and alongside most styles, enjoying the differences and similarities.

Gakushuin Karate International, our association was formed in 1970, initially in Scotland, however following my travels throughout the world, we are fortunate to have clubs in most continents, many clubs are understandably linked to military establishments, providing continuity of training and opportunities for soldiers, families and others to train wherever they find themselves.

I was elected treasurer of EKGB in 1994 (latterly Finance Director), and continued to serve the members interests until the members agreed to disband in 2005, following the debacle of Karate England 2005 Ltd, I have once again become involved with the political and administrative needs of karate through EKF, since I believe the members need sound processes and policies which will overcome previous failings and provide a stable future for Karate in England. I feel fortunate to have like minded individuals who also are dedicated to ensuring the longevity of EKF on behalf of the members for the future.

John was an appointed delegate on the interim Board of the English Karate Federation (National Governing Body of Karate) 2007/08.

He is also an appointed delegate on the Board of the English Karate Federation (National Governing Body of Karate) 2008/09.
